| The Rufus Abbott Manor is an 1840's Mormon Nauvoo Bed and Breakfast built by Rufus Abbott in the early 1840's. The home has recently been lovingly restored and is furnished with a wonderful mixture of beautiful antiques and furniture. Of the original 350+ brick homes built in Nauvoo in the early 1840's, this home is one of only some three dozen still standing. |
|
| Situated near a farm on the east end of Nauvoo with wonderful surrounding grounds and views, the two-story brick home features four guest rooms with fireplaces in each of the original rooms of the home. Brick from the original temple was used in the reconstruction of the fireplaces. Because of the age of the house the fireplaces cannot be used but add charm to each room. Original wood floors still exist in all rooms except the Keeping Room and the 1923 Parlor Room, and wide original pioneer stairs lead to the upstairs Blue and Quilt Rooms. |

The kitchen was bricked in and covered with sheetrock for years. Now it is a wonderful blend of 19th and 20th Century furnishings. You'll find the original kettle arm still inside. It has often been called "the coziest room in Nauvoo!" Adjacent to the kitchen is an enclosed porch, affording a nice place to eat while enjoying the view out the back of the house. There's a century old tree with a children's rope swing and a spacious lawn for picnics or sports. Kids can sleep in tents out back. It can and does rain often, so be prepared! |
A full gourmet breakfast is available every morning. The menu may include quiche, omelet's, special Belgian waffles with many sauces and toppings, maple syrup, whipped cream, and always fresh hot breads and sweets, fresh fruits and juices, sausage and scrapple plus spoon bread and more.

The Abbott's completed the Rufus Abbott Manor in 1846, but fate did not allow them to rest in it long. In the late Spring of that year, they packed some of their earthly possessions and followed Brigham Young to arrive in the Great Salt Lake Valley in the fall of 1847. (Click here for more history) |

It took four workmen on scaffolding a month to simply remove the 155 year old mortar in between the bricks on the outside of the house and replace it with new mortar. Eleven authentic Temple stones cut out of limestone were used for the outside stairs to the basement. One of the stones weighs about 400 pounds and is displayed in front of the house. The original 20+ foot well in the back yard will be rebuilt this next year. We wonder what will be found at the bottom of the well! |
